ARTIST STATEMENT
"I was born in Calcutta, India but raised in both India and Africa. I later emigrated to Canada but returned to the UK. I have traveled extensively all my life and find I am particularly motivated by the places I've lived in. I have always drawn for as long as I can remember and as a child won numerous art prizes. As an adult I graduated from Art Classes attending at Camberwell School of Art (1959 – 1963), Vancouver School of Art (1964 – 1966), Farnham School of Art (1977 – 1978), Wiltshire College (2000-2004). The inspiration for much of my work comes from my childhood spent in both India and East Africa. I aim to reflect the rich and unique array of sounds, smells and colour from these continents in all that I produce. For my generation, Art was never treated as a real occupation, at least not one that paid. It was considered, alongside music and literature, as an interest to be encouraged by both my parents, but nothing more. This attitude spurred me, with my "real job" to Canada, where I lived for 12 years, a move that only sought to intensify my artistic leanings. The spectacular, almost chocolate box scenery and distinctive native interpretation of this has again been a defining influence.
This rich medley of experiences and influences, have led to what some would describe as a unique style, something that I personally consider flattering. I have certainly found it difficult, when asked to explain my style or subject matter preference in the past by various establishments to come up with any particular category. In recent years, having been afforded more time once my family had grown up, I have been able to indulge myself with a number of different art forms through experimentation in my own studio, and working with and learning from others. I have been using new painting and printing techniques, working with dyes, collage, canvases, computers, photography, and sculpture all of which are prevalent to varying degrees amongst my collection. Historically I have been able to sell my work privately, and have only exhibited locally on rare occasions. Recently I exhibited my work at a Private Exhibition in Bath (Somerset), and also at both Bruton Art Society and Frome Art Society Annual Exhibitions. I have also exhibited at the Bath & West Show annually. As with most artists I am afraid I suffer an aversion to the time-consuming nature of the business and marketing side of art in favour of the creation. The onset of technology, and the effect it has had on the growth and showcase opportunities for creativity is a good thing, I wish it happened earlier in my life as it affords so many opportunities. On the other hand, I may not have been lucky enough to have the influences I did if that were the case. I hope you enjoy my work, as much as I enjoyed creating it".
